Arts on Tap: Ekphrastic Poetry
Thursday June 21, 6 – 8:30 p.m.
This is the session for all adventurous poets and writers. Participants will be guided by London’s Poet Laureate Tom Cull in an exercise of narrating or reflecting the “action” of a painting or sculpture. Students will observe the current exhibition in our gallery, select a piece to write about, and at the end of the evening get an opportunity to share their ekphrastic poem with the class. This is a terrific workshop for new or experienced writers and is a great opportunity to be inspired by a work of art and explore this form of poetry with a great coach.
This workshop is meant to be educational as well as social so grab a glass of wine or beer from our cash bar! We supply all of the writing materials but feel free to arrive with your favourite pen relaxed and ready to write and share poetry. Each attendee will leave with their completed works and confidence in their poetic prowess. The workshop will take place in the gallery where participants will be inspired by the current exhibition.
About the Instructor
Tom Cull is a poet, a creative writing professor, an active participant in London’s arts scene, and a community organizer. He writes across a variety of poetic forms, from the traditional lyric to spoken word to the experimental. His commitment to exploring human connection with animals and natural environments is evident in his 2013 chapbook, What the Badger Said, and his 2018 full-length collection, Bad Animals. Tom also dedicates his time to a number of literary and community organizations including WordsFest, Poetry London, and Back to the River Steering Committee. And with his partner and six-year-old son, Tom co-founded Thames River Rally, a volunteer organization that coordinates monthly cleanups of the Thames River and encourages partnerships with community organizations to protect and preserve green spaces across London.
